Geographical information
Kyrgyzstan is a country with picturesque mountainous nature. It is located between latitudes of 39 and 43 degrees in north and between longitudes of 69 and 80 degrees in east.
Total area of the country is 198.5 thousand square kilometers. The territory of the country is placed between altitudes of 394 m and 7439 m above sea level. Average altitude of the territory is equaled to higher than 2000 meters. About 90% of the territory stands at the altitude of higher than 1500 meters.
Kyrgyzstan has population of 5.3 million people, out of which Kyrgyz are – 66.9%, Uzbeks - 14.14%, Russians – 10.65%. Overall there are more than 80 nationalities living in Kyrgyzstan.
National language is Kirghiz, official language – Russian.
National currency in Kyrgyzstan – som.
The relief of Kyrgyzstan is mainly mountainous. Most of the territory of Kyrgyzstan is covered by 86 mountain ridges. Wavy plains called – «syrts» are located in the east part of Interior Tien Shan between sloping flank of ranges. The highest peaks Kyrgyzstan are: Pobeda Peak (7439 m), Lenin Peak (7134 m), Khan Tengri Peak (6995 m), Drujba Peak (6800 m).
There are a lot of glaciers on the territory of Kyrgyzstan. Number of officially registered glaciers with area of more than 0.1 square kilometers is equaled to 8 thousand.
The glaciers occupy 4.2% of the territory of Kyrgyzstan. They are situated in the highest mountains parts not lower then 2850-2900 m above forests and alpine meadows.
The largest glaciers are: Enilchek, Kaindy, Korjenevskii, Mushketov, Semenov, Petrov.
Glaciers and mountainous snow melting is the main source for the majority of mountainous rivers in Kyrgyzstan. The rivers have very turbulent flow at the upper sources in the mountains. The largest rivers in Kyrgyzstan are: Naryn, Karadaria, Chatkal, Kyzyl-Suu (western), Chu, Talas, Sary-Djaz.
Kyrgyzstan obtains big reserves of fresh groundwater, mineral and thermal water. Mineral and thermal waters of Kyrgyzstan differ by their variability and richness. The carbonic acid waters like Borzhomi, Arzni and Yessentuki were discovered at Fergana ridge. The water like Narzan is more often in the northern flank of Kyrgyz Ala-Too, in the Kabak-Too Mountains, at Atbashi ridge close to Chatyr-Kul Lake. Total mineralization of carbonic acid water fluctuates from 1 to 40 gram/liter and content of carbonic acids fluctuates from 500 to 2500 mg/l.
Kyrgyzstan has a very varied climate. In some regions it is acutely continental, in others close to maritime climate which is impacted by presence of large Issyk-Kul Lake and mountainous relief. Most of the territory of Kyrgyzstan has a temperate climate. The southern part of Kyrgyzstan has a subtropical climate. Annual and daily temperatures are smoothed and sometimes there are observed the signs of aridity.
Seasons are clearly marked. The length of the winter-day is 9 hours and summer-day 15 hours. There are more precipitation and low temperature in the mountains than in the plains. Non-freezing Issyk-Kul lake softly impacts on temperature in the lake’s zone. In winter time temperature in this area is 3°C-5°C higher than in other regions and there is not harassing heat in summer time. Minimal absolute air temperature in winter reacheses -50°C in Ak-Sai. Maximal absolute air temperature in summer reacheses +43°C - +44°C in Chu valley and southern part of Kyrgyzstan. The average wind’s speed is not too high – 1-3 mps.
Bishkek is the capital of Kyrgyz Republic. This is political, economical, scientific, and cultural and transport centre of republic and Chu region. President of KR, his administration, Jogorku Kenesh (parliament of republic), government and Supreme Court, National bank, administration of Chu region work in Bishkek. Offices of international embassys, representations of the World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Asian Development Bank, Central Asian Bank for Cooperation and Development and other republican and international organizations are also based in Bishkek.

Population: about 1 million people Bishkek is located in the middle of Chu valley next to Kyrgyz Ala-Too at an altitude of 700-850 meters above sea level. Summer is hot and dry in Bishkek. Sometimes temperature in July reaches 42° C. The average winter temperature is -7° C. Usually snow is not higher than 15 cm. Average annual temperature is about +10° C. There is 400 mm precipitation in Bishkek per year. About 322 days a year are sunny. Average atmospheric moisture capacity is 38% in July and 68% in January. Annual average atmospheric pressure is equaled to 928,8 millibar.
Kyrgyz culture has been forming peculiarly. It has reflection of hard destiny and labor of a Kyrgyz-nomad, his national character with poetical perception of visual environment, fertile imagination and delicate sense of beauty.
Main kinds of Kyrgyzdecorative and applied art were and have remained up until now production of different felt carpets and other household articles made of patterned felt, workmanship of woolen pile carpets, patterned weaving, embroidery, braiding of patterned mats by prairie plants stem (chii) witch wrapped by color wool, making patterned leather goods, woodcutting and embroidery metal working.
In addition to the above listed kinds of applied art, comparatively recent new kinds of embroidery working of mode goods have appeared: manual braiding out of wool and silk, lace knitting, braiding out of leather, color wood painting and bone cutting.
Materials of the Kyrgyz National Historical Museum, in the form of expositions as well and funds, assure you that Kyrgyz art launch from early antiquity. The museum comprises monuments from ancient, mediaeval and modern culture and art of Kyrgyz nation. The funds of Kyrgyz National Museum of the Arts named after G.Aitiev are renewed by art works of national masters permanently.
Kyrgyz folklore is also very varied. The Kyrgyz folklore is represented by ritual poetry, lyric, sanat, nasiyat (moral verbal poetry), proverbs, riddles and tales, myths and legends. It is mentioned in the myth about origin of Kyrgyz nation that «Kyrgyz» had appeared from forty girls («kyrk» – forty, «kyz» - girl) which became pregnant by drinking a foam from a river.
Since ancient times Kyrgyz people have been famous for their musicality. They devide their music rooted centuries ago into songs and kyu. Kyu includes all musical compositions for national instruments.
The most popular national musical instrument is three-stringed comuz. Also two-string bow instrument called kyjak and reeded temir ooz comuz, reeded jigach ooz comuz, wind flute instrument (choor), wind reed instrument (surnai) are very famous among people.
Traditional kind of Kyrgyz music is solo music play. Performance of musicians and singers by-turn in form of competition is very popular.
The special kind of Kyrgyz song folklore is akyn song-creativity. Akyn is national singer- improvisator. Talented akyn- virtuoso differs by his perfect vocalic abilities and rich poetic gift. Akyn accompanies his singing with playing the comuz. The main characteristics of Akyns singing is improvisation, ease of development music- poetical thought, tonally- rhythmical freedom, recitative style of performance. Comuz accompaniment is often duplicates a voice of akyn. There are musical comuz losses at the beginning, at the end and between song couplets.
