Guests of the Forth Art-House Film Festival

1) Birgit Beumers is Professor of Film Studies at the University of Aberystwyth, Wales. After completing her D.Phil at St Antony’s College in 1991, Oxford and a fixed-term appointment at the University of Cambridge, she joined the Russian Department atBristolUniversity.

She specialises on contemporary Russian culture, and has published widely on cinema and theatre. Her most recent publications include Nikita Mikhalkov (2005), PopCulture Russia! (2005), A History of Russian Cinema (2009) and, with Mark Lipovetsky, Performing Violence (2009), and, as editor, 24 Frames:  Russia(2007); The Post-Soviet Russian Media (2009, with S. Hutchings and N. Rulyova), Alexander Shiryaev, Master of Movement (2009, with D. Robinson and V. Bocharov), Directory of World Cinema: Russia (2010), and The Cinema of Alexander Sokurov (2011, with Nancy Condee). She is currently working on Russian animation. She is editor of the online quarterly KinoKultura and of the scholarly journal Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema.

2) Boris Nelepo is a film critic and festival programmer whose interests include French post-Nouvelle Vague cinema, Portuguese cinema, Asian cinema, experimental and independent filmmaking. He curated several film festivals, including an overview of the classical British cinema in the 1960s and the retrospectives of Bela Tarr, Seijun Suzuki and Philippe Garrel. Boris is Editor-in-Chief of Kinote online film journal dedicated to in-depth analysis of avant-garde cinema as well as Contributing Editor to the pivotal film magazine Séance, and a Film Review programme presenter at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty since 2008.

He also writes for a number of Russian and international publications such as Trafic (France), MUBI (USA), Cinema Scope (Canada), Lumiere (Spain), Moving Image Source (USA), Nobody (Japan), De Filmkrant (Netherlands), GQ, Interview, The Hollywood Reporter (Russian Edition), and the major national daily Kommersant. He was named Best young critic of 2010 by the Russian Film Critics Guild. In 2012 he served for official jury of Locarno film festival. Now he is the Russian film consultant for the Locarno Film Festival.

3) Dennis Vaslin, producer. His  VOLYA FILMS - established in 2004 - is a Rotterdam based company producing author fiction films and creative documentaries, mainly as international co-productions. Denis Vaslin graduated from the department of Slavic Culture & Languages of the Institute of Oriental Languages in Paris in 1994. After five years of working as a distributor and then for a production company in France, and five years as a production coordinator/manager and as a line producer in he Netherlands, Denis started Volya Films in 2004 to produce and co-produce author fiction films and creative documentaries.

The company develops projects with young directors and more experienced filmmakers mainly in the frame of international co-productions. He (co)produced  films as “Putin's Mama” by Ineke Smits, ”Double Take” by Johan Grimoprez and “The Light Thief” by Aktan Arym-Kubat. Denis is a graduate of the Binger Lab in 2004 and 2011, EAVE 2006 and EURODOC 2007. In 2010, in association with Lucas Rosant and Eric Mabillon, Denis created Mandra Films, a French production company.

4) Guillaume Mainguet, Produire au Sud workshop. Born in 1977. Graduated from the Rennes-Britain University, Guillaume Mainguet was a freelance cinema critic and promoted independent films in different sectors of cinema distribution for 8 years. Then he started to work for the Festival of 3 Continents in 2007.

Since 2009 he is coordinating its professionnal programme, the international training workshop Produire au Sud. Guillaume Mainguet is also author and director. He is currently preparing his third short film and developping his first feature film.

5) Marc BASCHET, producer, he has been producing TV series and films and many features films for years. Among them, he produced the feature films:  Before the Rain by Milcho Manchevski (Golden Lion Venise & oscar nominated), Doberman by Jan Kounen, Fourbi by Alain Tanner (Cannes selection), Les Portes de la Gloire by Christian Merret-Palmair with Benoit Poelvoorde, Le Plaisir et ses Petits Tracas by Nicolas Boukhrief (Monica Belluci, Vincent Cassel,  Matthieu Kassovitz), Il Tempo dell’Amore by Giacomo Campiotti, Andrè le Magnifique d'Emmanuel Silvestre et Thibault Staib, Elles by Luis Galvao Teles(Miou-Miou, Marisa Berenson, Carmen Maura). Africa My Africa and Kini and Adams (Cannes selection) by Idrissa Ouedraogo,Train of Life by Radu Mihaileanu, (Di Donatello, Fipresci & audience awards Venise). The Adopted Son (Locarno, Tokyo, Angers…) and The Chimp (Cannes selection)  by Aktan Arym Kubat (aka:Abdykalykov), Heaven by Tom Tyckwer with Cate Blanchet, Deadline by Ludi Boeken with Anne Parrillaud  and No Man’s Land by Danis Tanovic (César, script award Cannes, Golden Globe, Oscar winner)…..

Marc Baschet

Together with director Danis Tanovic and his fellow producer Cedomir Kolar (with whom he has been working for 22 years now), he produced Danis’ films Hell written by Krzysztof Piesiewicz, Triage, with Colin Farrell, Christopher Lee and Paz Vega,Cirkus Columbia and Iron Picker (2 Silver Bears in Berlin), The Light Thief by Aktan Arym Kubat, (Cannes Directors fortnight), Benjamin Filipovic’s film Well Tempered Corpses, Serbian director Srdjan Karanovic’s Besa as well as three films by Marion Hänsel: The Sound of Sand, Black Ocean and La Tendresse. He recently produced The Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra (Cannes 2013 Critic’s Week). He is actually working on the development of Le Mystère Trannoy, by Avril Tembouret and Vladimir Rodionoff, Centaur, Aktan Arym Kubat’s latest feature film, Suha Arraf’s The Poster, and The Narrow Frame of Midnight (in production) by Tala Hadid, as well as on Danis Tanovic’s project, White Lies (in production).

6) Matthijs Wouter Knol, manager of the Berlinale Talent Campus. Dutch-born Matthijs Wouter Knol (1977) studied Contemporary History at Leiden University and at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome. He worked as a freelance journalist until 2001 before joining in Pieter van Huystee Film, an Amsterdam based renowned and internationally award-winning production company focusing on documentaries. Becoming Head of Development in 2004, he focused on the development, financing and international co-production of documentary film projects. He worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Heddy Honigmann, Mani Kaul as well as with a range of emerging filmmakers, being associate producer for various documentary films. As such, he co-produced in 2005-2007 the DVD edition of Johan van der Keuken’s digitally re-mastered collected works with ARTE Vidéo, which was awarded the Prix Cahiers du Cinéma 2006.

Matthijs Wouter Knol

In 2007, Matthijs Wouter Knol started working for the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), spreading his activity between the co-production and sales markets and the IDFAcademy training programme. Managing the latter programme, he initiated IDFAcademy’s first Summer School, focusing on strengthening the narrative structure of scripts and rough cuts. In addition, he has worked since 2001 as a producer for Foundation Arts&Ex, organizing several photography exhibitions, lectures, video-installations, and retrospectives - all closely related to cinema and in collaboration with the Netherlands Film Museum, the Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, Ohio), MoMA, Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and Galerie Colette (Paris). Knol has been working as a narrator for documentary films and served as a board member of the Netherlands Association of New Filmmakers NFTVM. Appointed  in 2008 as the new programme manager of the Berlinale Talent Campus, Matthijs Wouter Knol is responsible for the full programming of the creative summit, project lab, studios and workshops for emerging filmmakers during the Berlin International Film Festival. Every year, the Talent Campus invites 300 talents from around100 different countries all over the world to Berlin for a six-day summit, to learn from experienced and renowned industry experts and celebrities and to encourage collaborative filmmaking. Apart from the Berlin programme, the Talent programme in Berlin co-hosts regional offsprings in Guadalajara (Mexico), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Durban (South Africa) and Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) in close collaboration with local film festivals.

7) Dominique Welinski, producer, distrubutor, consultant, France. In February 2012, after more than 20 years in the distrubution field, she set up DW, a consulting company. Since Summer 2012, she's been setting up the concept of the Taipei Factory for which she'll be associate producer. Since 2012, She's been working as a consultant for international strategy and development for several famous films. She's actually her 1st feature film as a producer at House on Fire productions. Oblivion Verses by Alireza Khatami (1st feature by a young Iranian director) and is also associate producer for Burning Birds by Sanjeewa Pushkakumara with Neon prods (2nd feature, Sri Lanka).
