1. This Birds Walk, Pakistan, USA (72 min.) from Documentary competition (screening 25.10.2013)

Synopsis. The struggle of wayward street children in Karachi and the Good Samaritans from Edhi Foundation who look out for them is captured cinema verité style, resulting in an ethereal and inspirational story of resilience under difficult circumstances.

 

 

 

2. Giraffada, Palestine, France, Italy, Germany (85 min.) from New Horizons Competiton (screening 26.10.2013)

Synopsis. When the only male giraffe at the zoo in the Palestinian West Bank dies, the zoo’s veterinarian and his ten-year-old son are determined to find a mate for the female before she dies of loneliness.

 

 

3. Run for your Life, Pakistan (120 min.) from Showcase (screening 26.10.2013)

Synopsis. Against the backdrop of the world of illegal immigration, three young men try to escape the reality of their everyday lives . . . and succeed in ways they had least expected. Starring Naseeruddin Shah.

 

4. Whispers of the Cities, Iraq, UAE (62 min.) from documentary competition (screening 26.10.2013)

Synopsis. Over 10 years Iraqi filmmaker Kasim Abid made a personal journey within the world close to his heart, gathering images of life on the streets in Ramallah, Baghdad and Arbil that reveal the daily struggle of the human spirit.

 

5. Harmony Lessons, Kazakhstan, France, Germany (115 min.) from Showcase (screening 27.10.2013)

Synopsis. A meticulous and successful 13-year-old science student faces the daily taunts of schoolyard bullies at his village school in the lonely steppes of Kazakhstan. Tired of suffering in silence, he methodically prepares his revenge.

 

 

 

6. My Sweet Pepper Land, Iraq, France, Germany, UAE (95 min.) from Narrative competition (screening 27.10.2013)

Synopsis. In post–Saddam Kurdistan, an independence war hero accepts a position in a dreary village where he meets a beautiful young woman. Director Saleem’s (Vodka Lemon) humor is sublime, as is the performance of Golshifteh Farahani. 

 

7. Before Snowfall, Iraq, Norway, Germany (105 min.) from New Horizons Competiton (screening 28.10.2013)

Synopsis. A nontraditional road movie about family, love, dignity and honor. Siyar, only 16, is the eldest male in the family. When his sister escapes from her own wedding, he’s given the task of finding her and restoring the family’s reputation.

 

8. Fandry, India, (103 min.), from Showcase (screening 28.10.2013)

Synopsis. The “untouchable' Jabya struggles to reconcile his status with his dreams in this uncompromising indictment of India’s caste system directed by Nagraj Manjule, one of the most significant and well-known Marathi poets of the last decade.

 

9. Hanging Dates under Aleppo's Citaddel, Lebanon, UAE (71 min.) from Documentary competition (screening 29.10.2013)

Synopsis. A young man whose father was disappeared by the Syrian secret police in the early 1980s recounts his experiences in the revolution, starting as a singer in mass protests and becoming a fighter in the streets of Aleppo.

 

10. Barber's Tales, Philippines (120 min.) from Narrative competition (screening 29.10.2013)

Synopsis. After the death of her husband, Marilou (Eugene Domingo) takes over his barbershop. But her conservative Marcos-era village is not ready for its first female barber. However, events take an unexpected turn when she wins over the other women.

 

11. In the sands of Babylon, Iraq, UK, Netherlands, UAE (92 min.), from Narrative competition (screening 30.10.2013)

Synopsis. An Iraqi soldier escaping from Kuwait as the army retreats in 1991 is captured and cast into Saddam’s infamous prisons, accused of being a traitor. Outside, an Iraqi uprising instills hope for those held captive in the killing fields of Babylon.

 

12. Blind Dates, Georgia (97 min.), from New Horizons Competiton (screening 30.10.2013)

Synopsis. Sandro, a 40-year-old Tbilisi teacher, still lives with his parents. He has little luck with the women he looks up on dating sites, but then meets hairdresser Manana, and falls in love. All is well until her husband gets out of jail.

 

13. Siddhart, India, Canada (96 min.), from Narrative competition (screening 30.10.2013)  

Synopsis. A powerful heart-rending tale about a poor Delhi street merchant desperately searching for his missing young son transforms into a genuine human portrait within a hard-working community that is rich in family and love.
