Sleepless Djigit a documentary made by Belgian film-makers

The presentation of the new documentary SLEEPLESS DJIGIT will be on the April 5, 2013 at 6 p.m. at Cinema House (Dom Kino, Bishkek, Logvinenko, 13, free admission). This film made by Marc Recchia and Christophe Rolin from Belgium in Kyrgyzstan.

Synopsis. Kyrgyzstan, summer 2011. Tokon, a retired teacher from South of Kyrgyzstan writes poetry during his spare time. Every summer his daughter Gulzat comes from Russia to visit him and help out on the farm. This year's misfortunes make Tokon focus more than usually on his daughter's departure. With the dismissal of his assistant and the absence of his wife, his world is slowly shrinking. Will it be possible despite his old age to remain the brave Djigit he needs to be in the eyes of the family?

A compelling idea about traditional family values and engagement emerges. It's the hope of many Kyrgyz abroad to return to their homeland.

Statement. In May 2011 we were researching on the topic of family value differences between the rural south and the urban north of Kyrgyzstan. There have been fundemental changes in Kyrgyzstan since its independence. Many people have emigrated to the north to try their luck in the neighbouring countries. The opposites between north and south became severely evident when we met Tokon, our main protagonist of the film. A brief insight into his past makes history vividly come alive.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Tokon started farming in his home-village in the south. As a trustworthy father, he would never allow himself to financially depend on his own children abroad. Despite this geographical distance a quite impressive and adaptive family model arose out of that situation. At the same time the work required on the farm of younger family members questions that positive impression. A choice between helping out the parents in the village or leaving to study/work abroad seems to be an everyday dilemma for all the members. Sacifices do seem unavoidable.

As Tokon embodied an emancipated personality and strong figure of a father, it was important for us to give him the word for a documentary film. How many families experiences the same difficulties and do not make the right choice between study and labour? After sevetal meetings, we understood that his cuurent situation embraced many universal questions. It was meaningful to share Tokon's reactionary but still refreshing view about third age and family life with an international audience.
